Attire

While working a medical conference this week, the main topic of discussion during down times was the apparel of the attendees.

Everyone attending this conference was in the medical profession.  Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and such.  Some retired, some still in residence programs, but all at one point in time attended college and obtained a degree in order to make it as far as they did.

It always amazes me at conventions and conferences the extreme differences in apparel.  Some are dressed as if they are on the prowl for a new found love.  Some dress as if they are heading in to the office for the day.  And then there are those who perhaps never made it to bed the night before and just decided to come as they are.

I am by my own admission a highly critical and judgemental person.  But I do so only in my head or in the comfort of others who will appreciate my humor.

Case in point, while at an event a few weeks ago, my colleague and I noticed someone wearing 5 inch heels.  My retort was that those shoes were only made to be worn upside down.

Seriously, if you are going to a professional conference where the main goal is to get credits for extended learning then basketball shorts and flip flops are not the appropriate attire.  Strike that, basketball shorts and flip flops are never the appropriate attire for anything not even playing basketball (because really, wearing flip flops while shooting hoops is just dangerous).

Think business casual people, no you are not in the office so you don’t have to go all out (unless you are looking for a job at the conference) but you do have to be presentable and not a distraction.

Although I do thank you Mr. Green Baseball Cap for providing us with a good laugh or six this week.
