Last night we saw the first Team Dance (Call Me Maybe) and half of the Stars performed their dances. Tonight we will see Team Ganghnam Style and the rest of the Stars.
It is still Guilty Pleasure week, the Stars pick out the song that is a guilty pleasure for them.
Let’s just get right to it.
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani – Tango (Toxic): Melissa got injured during rehearsals for the team dance and herniated a disc in her neck. With the extreme neck moves involved in the Tango I was concerned for her. She nailed it. Score: 27
Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough – Rumba (My Heart Goes On): Their tape piece for rehearsals brought me to tears. Their dance was beautifully choreographed (duh) and perfectly performed. The entire dance was done on a small round stage which made it more intimate. I could have done without the cheesy ending of him slipping under the stage but it fit the dance. Score: 27
Apolo Anton Ono and Karina Smirnoff – Samba (Give It To Me Baby): Lots of hip, lots of movement, lots of good dancing. I don’t know what dance Carrie Ann was watching. Score: 27 (seems to be the going trend tonight)
Sabrina Bryant and Louis Van Amstel – Waltz (So This is Love): To take on the iconic waltz scene of Cinderella and Prince Charming is difficult, but they did well. A waltz is a beautiful supposedly easy dance, but the difficulty is in being vulnerable and sweet, not something easy for Sabrina. Score: 29
Team Gangnam Style
Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerskovskiy, Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd, Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke, Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerskovskiy.
That is one of the most annoying viral videos I have ever seen, but this team turned it into the most fun dance in all 15 seasons of Dancing With the Stars. I could watch it over and over.
Score: 27
I voted for Kirstie of course. But I think Gilles Marini is going to win the whole thing, and I hope he does.

I loved the concept of this episode of choosing their own songs this way. I suppose they also had to pick a song that went with a dance they preferred, but everything fit so perfectly together for each of the couples. I thought it was awesome Melissa was able to dance after her trip to the hospital too. I’m glad the show was available to watch at all on my DVR though, because my kids constantly delete my timers to record their shows. When my DISH coworker would come over, there wasn’t anything to watch. Now the PrimeTime Anytime feature on my Hopper is set to automatically record all of the evening shows and I don’t have to set any timers. That’s convenient for me because it guarantees I won’t miss DWTS.
I could watch it over and over just to see Gilles dance wearing only that tiny towel. *DROOL*
I find these shows more addictive than the Trader Joe’s one pound chocolate bar.
Okay. So they didn’t knock Carrie Ann off her chair, but, oh, that tiny little towel. Melissa seemed a little stiff to me – probably part of the injury – and I wasn’t that impressed,. Re Shawn and Dereck, it was a gorgeous dance, but I kinda agree with Len that there should have been more rumba content and hip action on Shawn’s part. Still a good break-through for her. The problem with Apolo’s samba is that I still remember the amazingly kick-ass one he did with Julianne Hough in his original season and, I’m sorry, Carrie Ann had a point – there wasn’t the same chemistry going on.
Ah, but Sabrina’s waltz. I saw the costumes and knew immediately what they were doing. And it was so sweet and elegant and gorgeous! She earned every point.
I was afraid that that ghastly Titanic tune was going to be haunting me this week – it is among the most miserable of ear worms, but woop, woop, Gangnam is in the brain. The dance was hysterical, I totally agree. Definitely a keeper clip. We hadn’t seen the video, so played it after the show. Won’t be looking at it again, but it is oddly compelling.
