Sprinting for a Sport

SamsungI participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf Influence Central for Sprint. I received a thank you item for participating in this program

A Samsung Galaxy S 5 Sport that is.

Recently I attended an event at Sprint courtesy of MomCentral.  The focus was on the new Samsung Galazy S 5 Sport phone and the Sprint Fit Live app on their phones.  I was impressed.  I switched from a Blackberry to an iPhone almost 2 years ago and although I am happy enough with my phone choice, I have been considering a switch to an Android phone in the future.

Some facts about the S 5:

  • On the new Sprint Spark super-fast network
  • Water and dust resistant (not “proof” but resistant)
  • A textured body makes it easier to hold and prevents it from slipping from the hand
  • Three hard keys so it’s easier to operate when active
  • With Samsung’s Activity Zone, users can access a variety of preloaded content, including a barometer, compass, flashlight and stopwatch from a single screen

Enter for a Chance to Win $10,000 in the NEW Nutrisystem Great Escape $40,000 Giveaway!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Nutrisystem for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I’m fat.

That’s no secret.  I have never been ashamed of my body or my weight.  Most women lie about their age and their weight but for me they are just a fact, a part of life.  The other day I couldn’t remember my age, I wasn’t lying when I said I was 48, I was just wrong.  (I am 46 by the way)

I weigh 325 pounds.  Do I wish I were thinner? Sure.  Do I really like bacon and cheeseburgers and potato chips?  YES!

I don’t “diet” well.  I don’t think depriving yourself of something is healthy, in that once you reach your “goal weight” it is now ok to go back and eat whatever you deprived yourself of.  Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

But all of that is neither here nor there.  You are here because you want to enter the Nutrisystem Great Escape $40,000 Giveaway! and win $10,000 right?  ME TOO!

Not So Wordless Wednesday – I Stir Fry You in My Wok

The illustrious Kim Prince thought it would be fun to give us an oddball phrase for this week. But I think I’m up for the challenge.

Last night I had dinner with Adam and he mentioned he had the day off and had some errands to run today so I offered to loan him my car. I figured I would call the boss and ask him to give me a ride or ask my son-in-law, somehow I would find a way to work.

At some point at the night I decided I would walk this morning. It’s 1.8 miles not really that far, some actually do consider that walking distance. Me not so much.

A good friend texted me this morning and offered me a ride after she dropped her son off at school, but I declined. I can do this I kept telling myself.

I started out shaky my ankles were weak the left one was hurting really bad. But I soldiered on. Because I favored that ankle my hip then started to hurt so about halfway through I was ready to stop.

I had already put it out to the world all over Facebook that I was going to walk and I was getting encouragement from family and friends. Humiliation kept me going I couldn’t stop because then what you can’t even walk a mile.

I made it to work in under an hour – 1.8 miles. I don’t know if that’s a good time or a bad time but all I know is I made it.

Oh yeah, I forgot I stir fry you in my wok, my face looks like it’s been stirfried after 1.8 mile walk.

A 3D Convert

WARNING! This post contains a picture that may or may not include a bare breast and that bare breast may or may not be mine.  You may or may not want to stop reading here.  But just in case you do stop reading know that the jist of this post is that 3D Mammograms are the future and the future is now and Pomona Valley Hospitals are ahead of the game.

You have been warned.

note the pretty robe that covers all of me, why can’t all Dr offices have nice robes?

I was recently given the opportunity to receive a free 3D Mammogram through Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (yes FTD that is my disclosure).  Just about 4 years ago I found a lump in my left breast and freaked out.  Thankfully with the assistance of Every Woman Counts I was able to receive a mammogram and a biopsy.  The biopsy was not without it’s problems but all was clear and well in the end.  Had the opportunity for a 3D Mammogram been around back then I wouldn’t have had the problems I did.

All four facilities that comprise the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center have the newest 3D Mammography Units, that’s more than any other Southern California Hospital.

Traditional mammography creates a flat, two-dimensional image of the entire breast.  This can result in overlapping breast tissue that can either hide a small tumor (as in my original detection) or make it more difficult to see.  3D mammography creates individual images, which allows your radiologist to examine the breast one millimeter at a time.  The superior images help the doctors tell the difference between breast tumors and harmless areas that might have looked like a problem on a standard mammography image.

This can result in fewer callbacks for additional mammograms and biopsies, which helps to reduce the anxiety and stress many women (myself!) feel when there is a question about the breast cancer screening.

Most insurance plans cover 3D Mammography. But if your’s doesn’t or you have a really high co-pay you can still get an inexpensive 3D Mammogram from Pomona Valley for only $100, and if you go in the month of October it is only $50!  The only caveat is you must be over the age of 40.

Those numbers are significant. That's how many POUNDS of pressure are on my breast at that moment!

Those numbers are significant. That’s how many POUNDS of pressure are on my breast at that moment!

Not only is there less pressure on your wallet and your stress level there is actually less pressure on your breast.  My first mammogram I cried.  It was so painful, I had heard stories, but never realized how painful it can be.  Hell I have gone through natural childbirth and have a very high pain tolerence level, but I cried when I got “squished”.

This time (my third mammogram) was quick and almost painless.  You can’t have a complete pain free mammogram until they find a way to not actually SQUISH your breast.  But this time there was no twisting, no turning – the machine did all the movement.  I was in and out of the exam room within 10 minutes and that included introducing myself to the technician asking her a few questions and taking pictures.

My right breast (as seen in the picture to the right) took just over EIGHT PUNDS of pressure.  My left (in the picture below {remember the disclosure? yeah that one!}) took just over FOURTEEN POUNDS of pressure.  But because I was standing still and the technician wasn’t twisting and turning me, it was just slightly uncomfortable.

It has been almost a week since my exam, I am expecting a letter with my results next week.  Since I do self exams weekly (and you should too! yes, even you male person!) I think everything will be a-ok!

And now here is the squished breast.

Don’t scroll down if you don’t want to see it.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This is your last and final warning!

That’s 14 pounds squishing me!                                        But note the nice tan lines.

3D Mammogram

I was fortunate to be contacted by a PR rep for Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and tomorrow I will be heading out there to receive a 3D Mammogram.

From their website:

“At PVHMC, we are committed to bringing state-of-the-art healthcare to our communities. We are furthering that mission with the introduction of our 3D mammography services. 3D mammography is the most accurate breast cancer screening available anywhere and we are proud to offer this lifesaving technology to the women in our care.

  • We are one of the first hospitals in the region to introduce 3D mammography (aka tomosynthesis)

  • We will offer 3D mammography to every woman, every time, and we are the only hospital currently making this technology the standard of care for every mammogram we perform

  • We’ll have 3D mammograms in 3 locations – Pomona, Chino Hills & Claremont

  • No doctor referral is needed

  • Most insurance plans cover 3D mammograms

  • PVHMC offers 3D mammography for just $100 to the uninsured, so there’s no reason to put off this potentially lifesaving exam”

I am very grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

To follow along I will be live tweeting and face booking.  @Adriennevh , #PVHMC #3DMammo

Not So Wordless Wednesday – Sprucing Up

My mother not only had gray hair, she had white hair.  My sisters are all MUCH older than I but the gray eludes none of us.  I have always been afraid of dying my hair, I keep recalling the episode of the Brady Bunch where Gregs hair turns orange.

But I was offered the chance to participate in a “Get Your Sexy Back” makeover in the fall of last year (not what I thought it would be but the makeover was nice), so I said what the hell and told the hair dresser to do whatever she wanted to me.

Natalie set her hounds loose and they double teamed me.  I will forever be grateful to Natalie for calming my nerves and making me a believer.  Now if only there was a permenant solution and I didn’t need to go back every 3 months.

Are You PinTimidated?

Planet Fitness, known for its Judgement Free Zone® and No Gymtimidation philosophy, took to heart the coverage of a survey by TODAY Moms of 7,000 U.S. mothers showing 42% suffer from “Pinterest stress.”

To help de-stress the web, Planet Fitness launched a No Pintimidation relief effort by pinning fun, perfectly imperfect content on Pinterest that people can feel good about.

And, they created www.nopintimidation.com, an interactive tool that helps de-pintimidate images by first uploading an image they find “Pintimidating”, and then adding fun embellishments like cats, unicorns or phrases that call out the idealistic perfection.

Stereotypical Shopping

Everyone needs to take a step back when they think about stereotypes nowadays. Not all Muslims are terrorists not all African-Americans are on welfare and not all single mothers are sluts.
Clothing designers are in on the whole stereotyping.
I am a big girl I’m big in height, I’m big in width, I’m just big all around except where some expect me to be big.
When I go shopping for clothes and of course I go to the big girls store, it’s really hard to find long enough Pants, because they assume all fat people are short. Bathing suit season is a joke I have to buy a two-piece bathing suit because the one piece is never long enough for my torso.
Today I went bra shopping. needless to say it was a fiasco.
About a year ago I went and was fitted for a bra. I had never done that before and though it was quite an intimate experience it really was enlightening. I found out that I was wearing not only the wrong cup size but the Longstrap size I was wearing the shoulder straps incorrectly I was a hot mess.
After I was sized I realized I wear a 44B yes that B as in boy. You see bra designers assume that if you are a B cup you are a skinny person. And if you are a fat person well then your boobs must be humongous. So once again I fall into that non-stereo typical category.
Maybe I’ll just go bra less from now on, hell can’t be that bad right? Oh what the heck I’ll go pantsless too!

By the way this entire post was dictated on my new phone Man do I love this phone

Happy Birthday to ME!
