ATT IdolNation

IMG_0773Last week I was invited to attend a taping of American Idol so I grabbed my blogging bestie and we made a day and night of it.

She picked me up at work and we headed down to the Grove.  I of course skipped lunch so a quick trip over to the Farmer’s Market revealed a new food vendor Fritzi Dog where I had some yummy bacon and cheese fries and tots.  This is also where Ms. Eaglin informed me she doesn’t “care” for bacon.  She will eat it but doesn’t get the hype.  WTF?!  I am determined to not let this fact ruin our friendship.

A short wait at the studio gate for our PR rep to bring us our tickets and it was in to the studio we went.  There are no pictures because cameras, phones or any other recording devices are not allowed.  Sorry.

I don’t watch American Idol but I know a bunch of you do, so that is why I agreed to go and tell you about my experience.

I am always amazed at the diminutive size of an audience when you see a studio in person.  What looks like multiple hundreds of people on tv are really just about one hundred if that.

I had asked some of my friends who they were rooting for and the majority said “the stuttering kid”, but no one could remember his name.  This obviously speaks highly of this kid and of my friends. sigh.

I was extremely pleased when the “live” show began and it was announcced that it was a tribute to Detroit and that Smokey Robinson was the mentor and in the audience.  I couldn’t help but wsing along to every single song.  Each contestant would be performing a solo and a group number during the evening, so I got to sing along a lot!

The first singer of the night, Candice, belted out a rendition of Heard it Through the Grapevine that blew me away.  She was amazing.

A couple more performed but didn’t impress me much, and then the favorite amongst my friends came up.  His name is Lazarro by the way, and sang For Once in My Life.  I cried (while singing along).  He sang it with such feeling and meaning, you knew this song was special to him.  Unfortunately during his group performance he was beyond terrible, his singing was off key his dance moves were wrong and it was just pitiful.

More contestants performed and other than me enjoying the songs I didn’t really enjoy the singing.

Until the last girl, Amber, performed lately by Stevie Wonder  I almost fell out of my chair.

Will having been at the taping make me watch the show?  Probably not, but I understand why others are as dedicated to it as they are.

IMG_0180After the taping we hit up The Cheesecake Factory for a yummy birthday dinner for Desiree, we stuffed ourselves so full of Fried Mac and Cheese and other yummy stuff that we didn’t even save room for dessert.  WHoops!

Are you watching American Idol?  Who are you rooting for?  What’s your favorite cheesecake flavor?

American Idol airs Wednesdays at 8pm on FOX.

End of the Rainbow

EOR_200x500_2

Last week I told you to go see Oz in 3D.  Now I am telling you if you are in Los Angeles to go see End of the Rainbow at the Ahmanson Theater.  I will be there on Wednesday, if you’re there find me and say hi!

There’s no place like the Ahmanson!

It’s December 1968, and Judy Garland – in a London hotel room with both her new young fiancé and adoring accompanist – is preparing to make her comeback . . . again.

In one of the most celebrated performances on both the London and Broadway stage, Tony® Award nominee Tracie Bennett is an irresistible force embodying Garland’s signature cocktail of talent, tenacity and razor-sharp wit in this savagely funny backstage drama.

Admission

admissionAfter seeing the trailers, I settled myself in for a fun Rom Com.  While there is a little Rom and more than a little Com, this movie is so much more than that.

The official synopsis:

Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Paul Rudd (This is 40) are paired for the first time on-screen in Admission, the new comedy directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Weitz (About a Boy), about the surprising detours we encounter on the road to happiness. Straight-laced Princeton University admissions officer Portia Nathan (Fey) is caught off-guard when she makes a recruiting visit to an alternative high school headed by her former college classmate, the freewheeling John Pressman (Rudd). Pressman has surmised that Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), his gifted yet very unconventional student, might well be the son that Portia secretly gave up for adoption many years ago.  Soon, Portia finds herself bending the rules for Jeremiah, putting at risk the life she thought she always wanted — but in the process finding her way to a surprising and exhilarating life and romance she never dreamed of having.

This movie hit a little too close to home.  Some of you know my story and some of you don’t, I’m not going into it here.  I found myself a puddle of tears in the middle of a private screening room with only 10 people in it.  I am certain my choked back sobs were still heard throughout the room.  If you have any links to adoption be prepared to be hit in the gut.

If you don’t have any links to adoption prepare yourself for a light hearted rom com with more com than rom.

Oz The Great and Powerful

oz

Great? Not so much.

Powerful?  Absolutely!

Everyone knows the story of the Wizard of Oz (if you don’t I really don’t know how you can tie your own shoes let alone click around on the web).  Some of you know the story of Wicked, how the witches came to be in Oz (more of you should familiarize yourselves with that story). This movie tells you the story of how Oz became the Wizard.

Official Synopsis:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

My take:

I just read that synopsis for the first time as I cut and pasted it.  The second word is what I was thinking throughout the entire film.  While the movie was not “fantastic” it definitely was “fantastical”.  Like Oscar Digg’s magic tricks the movie uses a sleight of hand to make you think it is an amazing film.  That sleight is the wonderment of the cinematography, the VFX and the CGI.  When you go see this film (note I said when not if) you must pay the extra for the IMAX and the 3D.  I know, I have never recommended that for any film (other than Harry Potter), but this time it is truly worth it.

After the movie my friend and I discussed the fact that either the acting seemed stilted and forced or the writing was off.  But that word “fantastical” came coming up and perhaps that is all a part of it.  I am definitely going to see it again with the mind set of seeing a “fantasy” film and not an Oscar Winning film.
