Vegas or Burst

photo (3)For about a month, three of the four sisters were planning a trip to Las Vegas to celebrate my 45th birthday and to just relax and getaway.  The hotel was booked, the flight was reserved, the spa passes were arranged, the bags were packed.

The day before the trip Kathy stayed home from work with stomach pains.  She assumed it was something she had dealt with before and would subside before out trip commenced.

4am Tuesday morning, she isn’t feeling 100% but we get on the road anyways.  Around the same time Erika is catching her flight out of Indiana and we should meet up at McCarren airport at about the same time.

During the drive I could tell Kathy wasn’t comfortable, she was driving and was hunching a bit, but insisted she would be fine.

About an hour and a half in she pulled over decided she couldn’t drive anymore.  No problem, I climbed in the drivers seat and we continued on our way.

Just before Barstow she realized she could no longer take it and we headed to the local hospital.  Barstow Community Hospital (if you are ever in need out that way) is a beautiful new facility that just opened.  We were a bit fearful when we decided to go that far away from “civilization” but our fears were assuaged when we got inside and they immediately began taking care of her.

During an ultrasound it was assumed the pains were her gall bladder and the doctor ordered a surgery consult.  The surgeon wasn’t convinced and wanted a CT scan done.  By now Kathy was lucid enough to realize that maybe being in the middle of nowhere was going to be costly even with her insurance.  And sure enough after a call to her provider (Aetna) and a consult with the hospital cashier it was determined that up to this point Kathy would be out of pocket already in the thousands of dollars and that a CT scan would be $13,000 for which she would be responsible for HALF!  Even the doctor was flabbergasted by this news.

Kathy decided she would risk the pain of driving back to Glendale to her “in network” hospital and signed out of Barstow AMA.

Meanwhile Erika has landed in las Vegas, caught a shuttle to the hotel, bummed around the casin and upon hearing the news that we were headed back to LA, she caught a taxi back to the airport and hopped a flight to LAX.

Skipping past the trip to Walmart to fill a prescription and the drive to LAX after the dropping the patient off.

In the ER of Verdugo Hills Hospital it was determined (via the CT Scan that was now covered 100% by insurance) that it was not the gall bladder but instead the appendix.  The surgeon was called in and decided he didn’t want to wait until morning and good thing too.

Turns out her appendix was perforated by the time they got in there.  the surgeon showed us some “beautiful” color photos of it when he came out and said he was certain he cleaned her all up.

A prolonged stay in recovery because her blood pressure was low, a move to the ICU the following day because the blood pressure was still low and a move back upstairs the following day.

It is 4 days later and she is up and about, on a liquid (including Diet Coke) diet and just had her first shower.

Erika is heading back to South Bend in the morning and I start a 12 day work stint on Monday.  No specific decision has been made as to when Kathy will be allowed to come home.  But we will deal with everything as best we can when that happens.

Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and offers of support.  It hasn’t been the best birthday celebration so far, but it certainly hasn’t been the worst either.

A Fresh Reception

I may have mentioned once or twice that my daughter got married recently in Vegas.

With this ring, I thee wed

While we had a wonderful time and a beautiful wedding dinner with everyone that could come to Vegas, there were a good number of friends who couldn’t make the trip.

Their wonderful boss, Dominic Cangelosi – owner of Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale, offered to throw them a reception at the rink the following Sunday evening.

They sent out face book invites (kids these days) and told everyone it would be a “potluck”.  Not getting much response from people I was afraid there wouldn’t be enough food for the 60 people that RSVP’d.  I reached out to my amazing friend Debbie Goldberg at Fresh Brother’s Pizza and she generously provided us with more pizzas than we could eat and enough garlic knots that didn’t feel guilty at all when I ate 3 in my car on the ride to the rink.

Fresh Brother’s are located in Southern California, the first brother, Scott, originally opened Miller’s Pizza in Gary Indiana, and brothers Adam and Michael brought his recipes out west.  They have seven locations currently and an eighth in Santa Monica will be opening this fall.  Personally I am searching the Glendale and Montrose area hoping to get a location closer to me so I can get my fix of the amazing Miller.

Meat Meat and more Meat

And did I mention the garlic knots.

Seriously

Now I’m hungry.

No It’s Not

He and I were driving to Vegas for our daughter’s wedding. We left Monday morning in the beautiful 2013 Ford Flex that was on loan from Ford Motor Company to me specifically for this trip and headed out the 210 and up the 15. Over the next few days I will chronicle some of the more entertaining conversations he and I had during that road trip.

Him: What’s the big mountain we go over on the way.

Me: The Cajon?

Him: No, we did that one already before we got to Barstow. There’s another one.

Me: Halloran?

Him: No I’ve never heard of that one.

Me: It’s the one we are on right now.

Him: No that’s not it. There is a really big one between Baker and State Line.

Me: Yeah, Halloran, we’re going up it right now.

Him: No it’s not.

Me: Yes it is.

We do this back and forth for another few miles

Me: Look, the sign says “Altitude 4300 feet”. We are at the Halloran summit and once we turn this curve we should see State Line in the distance.

Him: They must have changed the name.

Me: Can’t you ever just admit I am right?

Him: Nope

He never noticed we were climbing to such a high altitude because we have never been able to do it without driving in the slow as molasses truck lane. We have always had to turn off the air conditioning and move as far right as possible. With the 2013 Ford Flex we drove at (or above) speed limit the entire time with the AC blasting me as much as possible.

I Think We Need to Stop

He and I were driving to Vegas for our daughter’s wedding. We left Monday morning in the beautiful 2013 Ford Flex that was on loan from Ford Motor Company to me specifically for this trip and headed out the 210 and up the 15. Over the next few days I will chronicle some of the more entertaining conversations he and I had during that road trip.

Him: I think we may need to pull over.

Me: Why?

Him: I may need a restroom sooner rather than later.

Me: But we just stopped a half hour ago. Are you okay?

Him: I don’t know, my bottom feels…..funny.

Me: ::giggling:: strange how?

Him: Either cold or wet, I can’t figure out which.

Me: ::laughing loudly:: I turned on the seat air conditioning without telling you.

Him: Good lord

Probably my favorite feature on the 2013 Ford Flex. The air conditioned seats were truly a life saver, not my life per se, but those around me. I am prone to hot flashes at any given moment and driving in and around the desert does not help that “I’m going to spontaneously combust at any given moment” feeling. But having the A/C in the seats certainly gave me relief when it was needed.

She’s Been Well Loved – Reposted

I am in Las Vegas this week.  My daughter, Marisa, is getting married on Wednesday.  I want to spend as much time as possible enjoying my family this week, so if you will please excuse me, I will be re-posting some of my favorite posts involving Marisa.

Those of you that have had an active role in raising and loving my daughter will recognize Risa Baby.

For those that are unfamiliar with her, let me introduce you.

Risa Baby came into Marisa’s life when she was about 2. I believe it was Easter of ’88. She was a beautiful doll close to lifesize and the perfect friend for her at that age. risa baby went everywhere. In the dirt, in the tub, in the pool, that doll and Marisa were inseperable. As time wore on her hair became matted and beyond rasta dreads. Taj took Risa baby home with him one night and strand by strand performed a complete hair transplant.

Flash forward 20 years, Marisa has a beautiful daughter who has adopted Risa Baby as her own. This poor doll is just disgusting full of love. She has been used as a pillow (note the drool stains), as a sicky friend (note the stains of urps), her fingers and toes have been chewed on (I would like to think by the dog, but I doubt it.)

Why am I telling you all of this? Because Tara over at Feels Like Home is having a Build A Bear contest. Although Caity loves Risa Baby immensely and she is a part of the family. I would like to win a Build A Bear Gift Certificate and maybe get something for the twins that will be here sooner rather than later.

FLEXible

Next weekend I will be receiving a 2013 Ford Flex to drive for 10 days.  We will take it to Las Vegas for the wedding.  One of the main parts I am interested in “testing” is the inflatable seat belts in the back seats.  I hope I am never able to actually test their inflatbility (which only occurs in an accident) but I do want to try them on kids and adults and see how their comfort compares to a plain old fashioned seat belt.

Happy Birthday to ME!

Back in October(ish) I got an email from Boyd Gaming inviting me to a Slot Tournament at The Orleans Casino in Las Vegas.  the invite included not only the tournament but a room for 3 nights, my friend and I jumped on it and here we are.

Unfortunately they sold out of extra entries so she couldn’t compete, but she nonetheless stood behind me and cheered me on through the two sessions.

Speaking of the two sessions, I played twice for 15 minutes each.  It was the Red White and Blue machine with the max bet of 2 coins preset.  Getting the Red White and Blue 7′s (in that order) was the big hit and paid 1,000 credits.

For the first session I sat next to a man from Minnesota, I didn’t hear where exactly but he said it wasn’t too far from Hibbing when I mentioned I had family there.  His wife was playing at another machine a distance away (the machine numbers were randomly drawn) so my friend cheered for him as well since he was a good sport and was joking along with us.  the lady on the other side of me however was not cheered for since she acted crabby when I kept singing along to the awesome soundtrack they were playing.

The first session I scored 13818, which when compared to others in my vicinity seemed average.  The highest score we saw was a bit over 20000 and the lowest was around 9000.  The second session when I surpassed my first score I was happy, but again my score of  16028 seemed average compared to others.

Out of 1200 entrants only the top 4 received cash prizes.  The next 46 received $100 in free slot play and the next 50 received $50 in free slot play.

This is where the Happy Birthday part comes in, I was number 81!  I won!  I received $50 in free slot play!

I couldn’t believe it when we saw my name on the list, can’t wait to hit the slots!

happy Birthday to me!

I’m Baaaaaaaack

I have been away in Las Vegas for 12 days. Working.  I won’t lie, I did some gambling, some partying and some fun having, but mostly I was there working.

A friend let me use his house while I was there, which saved me a ton of money.  But there was no internet access ACK!

But I am home now and I promise to get all caught up.  Within the next couple of days, I have posts and giveaways for you.  From Hersheys, from The Help and from D23.  I can’t wait to tell you al about everything, but for now, I need to catch up on my sleep.

Good night.

I did it!

We all know I have a terrible fear of heights.

With the bridge in Big Sur.

And the bridge in San Francisco.

And hell the freeway interchanges in my own neighborhood.

But I conquered all of those.  Ok, maybe not conquered but I achieved them, some more than once, some never to be done again, but hey I get credit for doing them once!

I spent the last few days in Las Vegas.  I have always wanted but have been too afraid to go up in the faux Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel and Casino.  But today was different.  Taj asked, I whimpered, he encouraged, I whined, he pushed, I conceded.  But I did so with a death grip on his hand for the entire elevator ride up.

Once we were up there, I stayed VERY close to the inside edge, which actually wasn’t a whole helluva lot better because the inside edge was only the inside edge around the ELEVATOR SHAFT!  ugh.

But I stayed up, I went with my back to the edge and posed for a picture (thank you nice newlywedes for taking our picture for us).

It was over 100 degrees out, I was sweating and crying the entire time, but I am glad I did it.

I am proud of myself.
